This night,
Briar was in the woods. The moon was
half full, giving out more than enough light for Briar to find and kill her
meal. Last night she’d bought a meal-
well, she’d bought a meal with coins she’d picked up somewhere, possibly from a
bag that had been hanging from some belt.
It didn’t matter. Last night, she’d been in town and that was fine too,
but tonight she belonged in the woods.
It would have been hard to explain, but fortunately she didn't have
to. The only people that were in the
woods tonight belonged there and they would understand. Either that, or they would die, but that was
a kind of belonging too.
The night’s air was not normal,
though it was entirely natural. It was
fuller than usual, sharper and faster too.
It carried a feeling of excitement, and then a scent of blood, the sound
of hoof beats and finally, it carried The Hunt itself.
Kate and the Ship
Kate slammed the control panel cover closed, activated the
power, and watched with satisfaction as the light transport ship came to life
around her. She let that feeling of
accomplishment push away that annoying, niggling thought she’d been pushing
back for several days now.
Ravvy’s Transit Recycling wasn't a bad place to work. They’d take in junk heaps, kindly called
spaceships by the pilots that had run them into the ground (for a small
fee). They did some scavenging as well,
though Kate hadn't really taken part in that particular aspect of the
business. They sold parts to mechanics
working on the cheap. The reason Kate
was there though, was because they also rebuilt and restored as many of the
ships as could be saved and got them flying the skies again.
